A migraine can last from two hours to three days and has a variety of unpleasant, difficult or devastatingly painful symptoms.
A few people with migraine have what’s called an aura, either on its own or preceding a headache. A gradually increasing loss of part of the field of vision is often the first sign. The growing blind spot may have a shimmering zig-zag edge akin to that of a starburst caption in a comic strip. There may be a feeling of sickness and apprehension, a craving for sweet foods or a nasty taste in the mouth.
Another possible feature is speech disturbance – the words come out jumbled, back to front, or too fast. A few people develop numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or a leg or even more unfortunate, paralysis down one side of the body. The good thing is that the aura is temporary – it lasts up to an hour. But the first few times it happens can be particularly frightening because you aren’t yet familiar with the pattern of your migraine, you wonder what on earth is happening, and worry whether you should seek emergency medical help.
The majority of sufferers have no aura but a headache that throbs and is often worse behind one eye.
Migraine runs in famillies and is usually triggered by a combination of factors including a flickering fluorescent light, television or cinema, lack of food, food sensitivity, certain sounds, stress, hormones, smoking, the colour red and changes in the weather or usual routine.
